Bellway Homes started work on site in 2013 with contracts signed in June 2014 to secure a total of 104 units, comprising of Affordable Rent and Shared Ownership tenure for Colne.
Handovers have been staggered, with the first phase completing in March 2015 and the final phase due to be handed over in Spring 2017.
Inspirational spaces to live and work
Planning permission to redevelop the former Marconi Works site in New Street, Chelmsford, was granted in March 2013. This development, contracted to Bellway Homes, will dramatically improve the connections and character of the city centre.
Iconic Marconi buildings retained
As such a significant element in Chelmsford’s history it is crucial that Marconi’s legacy is protected. With this in mind the defunct electronics firm’s key buildings are being retained for use and enjoyment by locals. Marconi’s iconic headquarters, built in 1912, is being retained as offices, while the old boiler house on Marconi Road and the water tower will also be converted.
New pedestrian route from railway station to New Street
Other old buildings on New Street are being removed to allow access into the new quarter. When complete, it will be possible to walk directly from the railway station to New Street. This new pedestrian route will pass through a series of attractive public spaces, with a green square as a central focal point.
400 new homes and offices on historic Marconi site
The development consists of over 400 new homes and new office buildings. Brick, timber, metal and glass as well as brightly coloured features will give the buildings a lively, varied appearance. Planning permission was accompanied by a legal agreement to secure affordable housing, transport improvements, sports and open space upgrades to Central Park and public art.
The opportunity to secure the 119 social housing units was secured on a competitive basis via bids submitted to the Developer from a number of Registered Providers.
