Leading East of England developers Iceni Homes has launched its first exclusive development of affordable homes for the growing numbers of single people and couples who are aged 55 and over in Cambridge.
The energy efficient scheme at Inverness Close, Chesterton will provide 40 two-bedroom apartments at Freeman House, located in its own grounds.
Work began this month on the £4.4 million scheme and East Chesterton Cllr Clare Blair laid the foundation stone on the development which is scheduled to be completed between March and April next year.
The contract is being financed through funding from the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency together with Cambridge City Council and Iceni Homes through Hundred Houses Society who will provide a full management service on the site.
The new homes will be built by Bedford based regional construction company SDC and are being developed by Iceni on behalf of Hundred Houses Society.
The apartments will have high levels of insulation, double glazing and some will also have renewable energy installations to help reduce heating bills.
Laying the first brick at the site, Cllr Blair said: “This housing scheme will provide much needed, high quality accommodation for older people in Chesterton and continue the strong partnership between the City Council, Hundred Houses Society and, now, Iceni Homes in delivering affordable housing.”
Iceni Managing Director Mike Goodson said: “Iceni is delighted to be delivering affordable homes for this growing sector of over-55s in attractive communities such as Cambridge. We are developing these homes in partnership with Hundred Houses Society to help meet the growing housing need, not only in Cambridge but also in Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk. Iceni has an outstanding track record for excellence in finding and delivering new developments and we are pleased to be working in such a successful partnership with Hundred Houses and Cambridge City Council on this scheme.”
Hundred Houses Society Board Chairman, Noel Garner said: “Older people in Chesterton will have the choice of an attractive, energy efficient, safe and tranquil environment, in a community setting.
“We know, from the new choice-based lettings system, Home-Link, that over 3,700 single people and couples, over 55, were seeking a new home in 2008."
“We will be able to help a small percentage of those households, so our work must go on, with our partners, to help to meet Cambridge City’s pressing housing needs. “
Iceni work in partnership with Colne Housing in Colchester, Suffolk Housing Society in Bury St Edmunds and Hundred Houses in Cambridgeshire to bring new affordable homes to the eastern region.
