The existing barn, which was on the site of the National Autistic Society’s Crossways House and lies to the north of the town centre, was uninhabitable and was replaced by a purpose built building comprising of four new flats, built over two floors. The two ground floor apartments have been designed to be wheelchair friendly and accommodation for the necessary support staff has also been included.
The property will be owned and maintained by Suffolk Housing Society, a provider of social housing across Suffolk, and will be leased on assured tenancies to people with autism or learning disabilities.
Mike Goodson, Managing Director of Iceni Homes commented, “As a regional developer, we are committed to providing local people with affordable homes and this new development is testament to that ethos.
“The new flats will enable people living with learning disabilities to live independently, but with the knowledge that support will be on hand if needed.”
