DEVELOPMENT OF THE WEEK: Quest Place, Maldon, Essex

Posted: Jun 23, 2009

Local authority: Maldon District Council

Housing association: Colne Housing with developers Iceni Homes

Architect: MGM Associates

Contractor: Explore Living

Value: £941,000

Number of homes: 13 homes including one detached two-bedroom cottage, six two-bedroom flats and two one bedroom flats and four refurbished one bedroom flats.

Features: The prominent site in the heart of the historic Essex port of Maldon, site of the Battle of Maldon, 991AD, is a three-way partnership of Colne Housing with Iceni Homes and Maldon Council, marking the redevelopment of  a site that was known as former Quest Motors (Vauxhall) showroom on Maldon High Street.

The original features of the traditional site have been preserved but with a modern twist which blends into Maldon’s eclectic roofscape. Located behind the historic High Street, it is within walking distance of the River Blackwater where traditional Thames Barges continue to tie up. The site which has civic and historical connections is a high profile scheme which includes refurbished flats above the old showroom which is now converted into a shop and retains many original features, such as high ceilings, feature windows and a listed clock - a prominent High Street landmark.
